How Can I Create An Effective Study Guide?
Building a study guide may be one of the most successful ways to prepare for the Grade 12 exams. Below you will see some advice on how to create a study guide that will give you the best understanding of your subject content.
Organise The Notes You Need To Study
- Split your sheet into two sections. Make sure to leave more space on the right than on the left.
- On the bigger right-hand side, jot down the important points from all the essential content and then make a summary and provide examples for each
- Now for the left-hand side, write cue questions that are linked to your content on the right. Then cover the right-hand side and check if you can answer the questions that you’ve just set for yourself.
Doing this will help you determine which pieces of learning content you’re good at, as well as those that you need to improve on.
Practice Essay Questions For Applicable Subjects
Practicing the answers to essay questions beforehand is a great way to prepare.
When doing this, you ready yourself for similar questions when they show up in the actual exam.
While memorising your learning material is certainly one way to make use of a study guide, practicing essay questions will solidify your skills, making you more equipped and ready to implement written responses.
Create A Vocabulary Section
You should devote a specific section of your study guide to definitions and key terms. It will help you feel more confident in using important terms if you are familiar with the terms and language used in your subjects.
How To Study For A Maths Exam
Below are 4 ways to improve your method of studying mathematics.
- Get Your Homework Done
- Use Exams And Practice Tests
- Try Joining A Study Group
- Learn From Your Mistakes
Do Your Homework
By doing your homework, you are actually studying. By understanding your maths concepts, your abilities will be perfected. If you see problems that are common within your learning content, it is likely that these will be tested. Your homework should be treated as if it were a study guide.
Make Use Of Practice Tests And Exams
Your teachers should provide you with previous exams to practice.
Go over the notes and rework these papers. By creating a practice test, you will be preparing for what might appear on the real test by trying your hand at a variety of problem types.
Try Joining A Study Group
Oftentimes, there will be certain parts about a subject that you do not understand, but your friend does, or vice versa. In these cases, it is important to form study groups and work beside friends and fellow students.
Studying in a group can help you keep on track and will encourage learning from one another.
Learning From Your Mistakes
After you get a graded test back, read over the mistakes you have made and understand how to fix them.
Since many maths concepts are known to be built upon one another, it is important to understand what was incorrectly done so that as the concepts continue to repeat and build, you will know what to do next time.
What Is The Best Way To Scan Your Work Before The Exam?
Make use of the 3 R’s (no, not the one for recycling)
- READ – the section of your learning material. Then close the book and hide your notes.
- RECITE – (speak aloud) all that you can remember about the content that you have just read. There is no need for fancy equipment. You can speak softly to yourself, to a friend, or to your desk mate.
- REVIEW – the section again and again to correct whatever you might have gotten wrong, or to relearn important information.
The reason this technique works so well is that when you recite, you immediately see what you had trouble learning, remembering, and understanding. This will remind you what you need to further concentrate on when you do the review
