How Can I Create An Effective Study Guide?
Building a study guide may be one of the most successful ways to prepare for the Grade 12 exams. Below you will see some advice on how to create a study guide that will give you the best understanding of your subject content.
Organise The Notes You Need To Study
- Split your sheet into two sections. Make sure to leave more space on the right than on the left.
- On the bigger right-hand side, jot down the important points from all the essential content and then make a summary and provide examples for each
- Now for the left-hand side, write cue questions that are linked to your content on the right. Then cover the right-hand side and check if you can answer the questions that you’ve just set for yourself.
Doing this will help you determine which pieces of learning content you’re good at, as well as those that you need to improve on.
Practice Essay Questions For Applicable Subjects
Practicing the answers to essay questions beforehand is a great way to prepare.

Make use of the 3 R’s (no, not the one for recycling)
- READ – the section of your learning material. Then close the book and hide your notes.
- RECITE – (speak aloud) all that you can remember about the content that you have just read. There is no need for fancy equipment. You can speak softly to yourself, to a friend, or to your desk mate.
- REVIEW – the section again and again to correct whatever you might have gotten wrong, or to relearn important information.
The reason this technique works so well is that when you recite, you immediately see what you had trouble learning, remembering, and understanding. This will remind you what you need to further concentrate on when you do the review

As a Grade 12 student, you should be studying for about 6 to 8 hours per day. Your time should be divided well. When creating your study timetable, do not forget to also add breaks. Never plan to cram!
You need sleep to remain alert and attentive. Studies show that even pulling one all-nighter can cause a drop in performance in the exams.
This is completely normal! Nobody is immune to laziness. But you have to take the Grade 12 exams seriously. Commit yourself to breaking the laziness habit.
